Skiing

While Annabel was in LA this past weekend visiting Pete/Ellie and Charlie (in addition to Uncle Nut, AE, Jude and Baby Neve), I took all three boys skiing. It was a great day up at Mt. Hood – light wind, sunny skies, pretty warm.

Left the house at 6:40 (about ten minutes later than ideal) so were about ¾ of the way back in the main parking lot. I brought an extra bag to carry ski boots so we all could walk in regular shoes. Ty was pretty good, although started complaining towards the end of the walk, and finally stopped about 50 yards from the finish line (J went back to help shepherd him along). Once in the lodge, D&J had to get boots on and go straight out to meet Coach Jeff and their group.

Ty and I spent about 1:15 in the morning on the magic carpet, and he increasingly got more comfortable – he even did a bit of turning (not sure if it was planned or not). He still wasn’t making a very big wedge, but he made progress. Gummy bears helped. He ran out of patience shortly after the Snoblasters teams got there (~10:10), so we went in for an early lunch.

After lunch, I got him to head back out (he originally wanted to go home) and we headed over to Buttercup. We did ~6-7 runs over the course of another 1:15, and by the end he made it the whole way down (several stops along the way) without any falls. He got much better at making a wide wedge to stop himself (almost to the point of being too wide!) and he was better traversing to the right than traversing to the left. He seemed to enjoy himself (although there were definitely moments of him yelling at me as he got frustrated).

We headed back into the lodge for some ipad time while we waited for the twins to finish up. They had a good day – they went down 1-bowl and 2-bowl in the morning (after having gone down the Face the week before – go boys!) so are excited about having broken the Black Diamond barrier more than once. I didn’t get to ski with them at all  since I was with Tyler, so am looking forward to the next opportunity to see how they have progressed.

The goals is to get Tyler up there at least 1-2 more times before we head to Sun Valley for spring break. I think with 2 more visits, he’ll have a solid foundation to spend time on a chair lift beginner run at the start of spring break, and could even progress to some easy blues by the end of a full week!
